A huge thank you to the Top Rated Water Softeners Team.

Pure Choice are an independent family business supplying best advice, installations, salt and service for a wide range of top rated water softeners systems. Both Richard and Tracey founded Pure Choice in 1995. Today’s team members include Sue Fuller, Michael Horsell, Ashley Lester, Kate Bisgrove and Tim Lawrence.

Pure Choice recently received the 2012 Dealer of the Year award for outstanding achievements and service from Ecowater Systems UK, the UK’s top rated water softeners. Richard and Tracey agree that the whole team of Pure Choice, who with their passionate approach to getting things right, deserve the merit and thanks for their effort throughout the whole of 2012.

Praise and thank you’s are seldom recognised whilst we are busy doing our daily activities assisting existing customers and new enquirers with their specific needs. To each member of the team thank you for your fantastic contributions to the growth and success of Pure Choice.

Top Rated Water Softeners

Every team member at Pure Choice has a passion to see things done properly, short cuts are not an option.

With this in mind, we all work towards our customers having the best water softener for the budget which they can afford. After we have helped our customers through the maze of choices, if required we will provide a full water softener installation service. Thereafter Pure Choice will always be available for any needs our customers have following the installation, e.g. salt deliveries and service. Even at this stage we are always politely nosey as to the well being of the water softener and its installation.

The Pure Choice team enjoy working with Top rated water softeners, in too many situations people go and buy a water softener that does not meet their needs. This brings problems which the original supplier seldom wants to resolve. At this stage the owners of these incorrect water softener systems search around for alternative water softener experts. Pure Choice have received very positive feedback from these people because we will sort out the problem that was not even ours.

It always best to consider top rated water softeners before you make any decision to buy.

Water softening systems – Low cost and price water softening systems the best home improvement to save energy and money.

Water softening systems are well known for eliminating hard water problems. Engineers and Plumbers have known for a long time that the damage caused by hard water limescale, (when the water is heated) can prove very costly.

The Financial Mail on Sunday published on the 3rd March 2013 an article titled “Forget double-glazing or solar panels, you can make huge savings by blitzing limescale“.

The article discusses the Governments new Green Deal which enables home owners to have an easy access to loans for energy saving for you home or business. But what about easier and cheaper options such as water softening systems?

In hard water areas of the UK, homeowners regularly have to clean limescale deposits from kettles, shower heads and other household appliances. This is the visible limescale, but the problem is much deeper, inside the plumbing system.

Hot water boilers:

The article states that the Carbon Trust has calculated that just one millimetre of limescale on the boilers element causes 7% more energy to be used to heat the water. Limescale will form at a rate of one millimetre annually. If we consider that an average home’s energy consumption is £1250 and that 84% goes on heating. Most heating systems use water in their central heating systems, then the issue of hard water limescale is a significant factor.

Research has shown that a boiler heating the average home’s hot water took:

  • 90 minutes with 0 mm of  limescale
  • 4 hours plus, with 5 mm of limescale, and
  • 6 hours plus, with 10 mm of limescale deposit.

In 2006 the UK Government introduced, via building regulations, that all new homes in hard water areas have water softening systems installed.

The traditional method of water softening systems, utilising an ion exchange process, is still the most effective method. Water softening systems have been used since the early 1900′s.

There are many more benefits of softer water. Household cleaners are dramatically reduced, skin and laundry feel great. Indeed many people will say that soft water helps with their eczema.

Soft Water Systems are generally either water softeners or water filtration systems

These are systems that make soft water from hard water. In most cases, via a softening piece of equipment.

A soft water system can either, be a water softener, or a filtration (also purification) system for drinking water and other specialist applications.

Soft water systems – water softeners

These soft water systems will modify the impurities in hard water, hard water minerals being calcium and magnesium. In simple terms the water softener collects calcium and magnesium and exchanges them for sodium. This process is called ion exchange, or Base Exchange.

Prices and install cost will vary depending on the water softener quality, size and performance, i.e.

  • Household, Commercial or Industrial applications
  • flow rates, (that is the volume of water required in a time period – normally litres per minute)
  • soft water capacity, (that is how much soft water can be produced before a cleaning process occurs)

Prices for these soft water systems (water softeners) vary from around £400 for entry level water softeners to many £thousands for commercial and industrial applications.

Water softening systems

Soft water systems – water filtration systems

These water filter systems generally are for single application use. Most water filters will not soften the water over a sustained period of time before they are exhausted and can no longer perform their duty. At the stage of exhaustion they will need replacing.

Water purification, using a process of reverse osmosis, will continually soften hard water.

Water purification is a popular way to dramatically improve drinking water but are not practicable for whole premise water softening.

Prices for these soft water systems will vary from: £20 (jug filters) to £500 for household water use. Commercial and Industrial applications run into many £thousands.

Household single application filtration

Beware! Soft water systems that claim to be a water softening system

There are an awful lot of water conditioners that claim to soften the water.

This is not the case.

The hard water is modified to attempt to reduce scale formation. Success using these types of soft water systems are generally disappointing when compared to the soft water systems mentioned above.

Pure Choice has chosen not to supply these conditioners due to their ability to truly soften the water supply.

Richard Bisgrove Director

Different types of water softener do exist

  • So many people get caught up in the romantic idea that just one of many types of water softener available is best for their home, when attempting to choose a water softener.
  • But is this really the best water softener to have installed in your home?
  • Pure Choice is independent of any one particular supplier, so we are well qualified to help with your decision.
  • We have customers with both non electric water softeners and also customers with the electric types of water softener.

Types of water softener

Basically a water softener is a vessel containing a media, better known as the resin or mineral bed. All types of water softener use this.

Having established that all types of water softener system are similar, what actually are the differences?

Different types of water softener systems

  • Manual
  • Semi automatic
  • Fully automatic

Lets us consider these separately

Manual water softeners

The manual types of water softener are very cheap and simple in operation, yet time consuming and complicated to use.

These are essentially are single vessel water softeners containing the water softeners’ mineral. Hard water will enter the water softener at the top of the vessel, pass down through the mineral and leave the bottom of the water softener vessel as softened water. Depending on the volume of the mineral bed, the hardness of the water and the amount of water that has passed through the vessel at some point the mineral will become exhausted. At this stage the mineral has to be regenerated or recharged. This is a process whereby common salt is added.

At this point these very simple types of water softener become very complicated. Lots of human interaction and time is required to complete this process.

These types of water softener are generally used for single application situations, e.g. a small commercial glass washer, say in a pub, club or hotel.

Semi automatic water softeners

These semi automatic types of water softener are the cheapest type of water softener to buy for home use.

Again the water softener comprises of our now infamous vessel containing the water softening mineral.

Unlike the manual water softener above these types of water softener have two extra components. Namely, a brine tank and a very basic time controlled electric valve. (There are in fact some very rare clockwork valve that do not actually connect the electric supply.)

The brine tank is where salt is stored, behaving as a reservoir for salt and area where some of that salt can be dissolved into brine. The job of the control valve is to enable this brine (salt water) to be injected into the water softener vessel to aid the regeneration of the water softener mineral. The trigger for this regeneration is via a time clock that is set up so that the water softener regenerates once every day, once every two days, once every three days, etc. The best guess is made when fitting these types of water softener systems to establish household daily water usage. This is never a very exact calculation, so caution is always best. Over estimates are assumed so that these types of water softener hopefully always will give you softened water. There is frequently a tremendous water of salt and water with these types of water softener, hence costing you very expensive ongoing cost.

These types of water softener are generally rare to install in the majority of homes. Although they are cheap to buy they can be very expensive to run.

Fully automatic water softeners

These types of water softener are more expensive than the other types, but are very cost effective to use.

Here we find the most popular types of water softener fitted and installed in most UK homes.

These types of water softener utilise a very effective and efficient water metering system. This is whereby the water softener measures the water usage in the home and reacts to the actual volumes of water used. Much better than the two types of water softener system mentioned above. The basic components are the same as the semi automatic types of water softener above, but now the control valve is triggered as a result of the water that is softened.

These types of water softener use two different types of technology.

Non electric water softeners

Very basic mechanical water meters as used in the non electric types of water softener, (the more popular systems from Harvey’s Softeners or the Kinetico. Although these types of water softener, that do not use electricity to aid the regeneration cycle, are very popular they often do not meet the more exacting needs of many family household. This is not to say you should not have one, but do look at the ongoing cost of ownership. These types of water softener are very easy to use, just add the occasional salt block.

Electric water softeners

Here we can sub divide these types of water softener into two areas.

Electrically operated – a very basic water softener technology.

These water softeners are somewhat dated in concept and design. They do much better job than the manual and semi automatic water softeners above. However, they are not generally considered better than non electric or electronically controlled water softeners.

Electronically operated – the most efficient of all designs of water softener.

It is fair to say that we now live in an electronic world, and these types of water softener certainly have found their niche in today’s marketplace. Once installed, they are easy to use, efficient and reliable. With intelligent analysis of the household’s water usage they adapt themselves to the most efficient operation possible. If the household water usage patterns alter they are able to self adjust to suit those new needs. This enables the water softener to reduce salt and water wastage extremely effectively. The historic concern of electric power cuts causing a failure of the water softener to soften water are now not the case, memory back up is a fantastic addition to water softener technology.

So how do you choose the most appropriate water softener for you situation?

It is best call us to arrange a visit to your home.

We will ensure that the water softener that is best for you is correctly specified to suit your needs.

TwinTec Water Softener S3 compare with the Kinetico 2020c

The TwinTec water softener S3 has become an extremely popular water softener supplied throughout specific network of dealers in the UK competing heavily with the Kinetico 2020c water softener.

Both of these brands are non electric block salt water softeners, designed to give uninterrupted softened water 24 hours a day. The TwinTec water softener S3 is a newer concept of design, utilising both of its twin cylinders simultaneously to provide softened water, rather than the Kinetico older type of design that can only use half of the water softening system at any one time.

The inside parts of a TwinTec S3 water softenerThe TwinTec water softener S3 made in the UK, unlike the Kinetico water softeners which built in the USA. The TwinTec water softener S3, which is a non electric block salt water softener, is said to be one of the most advanced water softeners available. The TwinTec water softener S3 is typically sold through an exclusive dealer network, (similar to the Kinetico water softener).

There are many local dealers that are located over the Country. It is fair to say that these dealers will want to provide you with a TwinTec water softener as their preference to any other choice of water softeners.

Let us look at features and benefits published in the sales literature for the TwinTec S3 water softeners
  • Small and Compact

The TwinTec water softener says that it the worlds smallest twin cylinder non-electric water softener. “Fits under the kitchen sink.”

(It’s not the only one, there are many more, an example is the Softnetic non electric water softener.)

Small and compact can be attractive, but sometimes it may be a compromise. Occasionally, with a smaller under sized water softener (any make of water softener) you may actually notice less water power (pressure) in your shower, especially if the equipment is cleaning itself or another member of your household is using water somewhere else. Pressure drop across these types of water softeners are just over 1 bar at 30 litres of water per minute. This is equivalent to say a modern shower running, hot and cold kitchen taps running water and perhaps the toilet cistern re-filling. This is suitable for the majority of homes but not all.

Small and compact is good as it will fit into awkward spaces that other softeners would not.

  • Twin Cylinders

“For a continuous supply of softener water 24 hours a day”.

Do you actually need softened water 24 hours a day? Possibly.

In fairness the TwinTec water softener, twin cylinder, does do a pretty good job but it is feasible that they can let you down and occasionally give you hard water to your home.

  • Non-Electric

Non Electric water softeners. What’s on the inside!

No time clocks. No computers. No worries.

The mention of time clocks and computers for some people is frightening.

Dealers will, to the most part, make an issue about these on other water softeners. Therefore, implying that the TwinTec water softener is better than any other water softener.

Correct, in some applications this may be the case, but not all, cases.

With any non electric water softener (including the Kinetico water softeners) the unit is preset in the factory to cover a range of water hardness values. The dealer will want to ensure that they are not called back when you get hard water, so they will generally be extra cautious to install a non electric set to cope with water hardness higher than you actually have. So the non electric water softener fitted is your home is actually over compensated for your true water hardness. (Electronically controlled water softeners have considerably easier fine tuning to suit the local water harness.)

Do not be worried about computers and water; water softeners have successfully been using them for well over 20 years. (And, you do not need to keep pressing buttons to set them.). Old fashioned time control water softeners dating back to the 1960′s 1970′s 1980′s and 1990′s on the other hand are not good if you are subject to many power cuts.

Non electric technology was pioneered back in the 1970′s, and has come a long way to now be a leading water softener technology of today.

  • Displacement Meter

This is the best part of this type of water softener. The accurate measurement of water usage is very important to any water softener, both non-electric and electrically operated water softeners. (The Kinetico non electric water softener however does have water metering issues. They have to have two different water softeners either a high efficiency unit or a high flow unit.) The vast majority of other water softeners are well engineered to ensure that their systems work very well.

The type of meter used in this softener is also used in some others. The displacement meter is superior to turbine meters which do not measure water accurately at low water flow rates. The displacement meter has the asset that it will react to both low and high water flow rates. The Kinetico water softener has to have two different flow measuring devices. Hence, the Kinetico 2020c HE, (high efficiency) and the 2020c HF, (high flow).

  • Brine valve

The unique brine valve fitted to the TwinTec water softeners is indeed unique. It is designed for these water softeners.

The TwinTec water softener, (as with the Kinetico system) leaves the factory preset with gearing for the in-built water meter and water hardness range. So fine tuning is desirable for different site conditions. You do need to know what you are doing when adjusting the brine valve. Most people will get frustrated if the installed water softener gives occasional hard water. (This could take days for you to get back to soft water.) Again, fine tuning, if actually carried out incorrectly, can lead to hard water. Therefore, the water softener is still set higher than it could be.

  • Resin

“The latest technology gives the finest granulometry of all”. Effectively this is jargon.

  • Regeneration

The TwinTec water softener is said to have, “the most efficient regeneration, which only uses 17 litres of water per regeneration only in 10 minutes”.

This initially sounds good.

Take an example, a TwinTec water softener selected for your home that has a water hardness of  say 300 parts per million. Every 400 litres of water that is softened requires 17 litres of water to clean itself. You probably think that 17 litres of water is not a lot when it is mentioned that other water softeners can use 80 litres of water to clean.

Let’s look at some other comparisons

Kinetico 2020c HF: 370 litres of soft water specification suggest 18.9 litres of water to clean, this equates to over 5.1% (actual measured is 26 litres of water to clean, this equates to over 7%).

TwinTec water softener S3: 400 litres of soft water needs 17.3 litres of water to clean, this equates to over 4.3%

Ecowater ESM 11 + : equates to 2% (this is a single cylinder electronically self adjusting water softener)

  • Performance

TwinTec State that: “The performance of the TwinTec out performs any other twin cylinder water softener and is second to none!”

A fair statement when compared to say a Kinetico twin non electric water softener.

  • Installation

The TwinTec water softener is designed for all modern day installations. Not always the case larger homes, and those with high flow systems, typically benefit from different a specification water softener.

Let us consider that if your home is fitted with high flow plumbing system. For example, a Megaflo un-vented hot water system is a very popular pressurized  hot water heating system. Megaflo say that the Megaflo eco can deliver up to 72 litres of hot water a minute.

The TwinTec water softener S3 does cope with this, but at higher flow rates performance can decline. At moderate flow rates fine, the higher the flow rate demand the greater the pressure drop across it. If you compare the Kinetico 2020c HE water softener which has a peak flow rate of 41 litres of water per minute the TwinTec has a further 24 litres of water per minute available.

The TwinTec water softener does claim that their water softeners is capable of providing flow rates over 55 litres per minute. At 55 litres per minute there will be a pressure loss of over 2.6 bar.

Most typical homes are fine. Larger homes do require larger water softeners.

How much do they cost to own?

A decent non electric water softener are going to be typically £1300 to £1700 including VAT, ancillaries and installation. It is wise to get a quotation, a reputable water softener supplier will be happy to visit your home and leave you a quotation to consider. You will then be able to compare with other quotes that you may have already collected.

The TwinTec water softener S3 will cost the average family of 4 people between £100 and £120 a year to run.

Block salt by Harvey's

Running cost – Some simple and quick calculations for the TwinTec water softener S3:-
Water usage
  • Annual water usage for 4 people at 140 litres of water per per person per day = 204,400 litres per year.
  • For 300 mg/l water hardness the TwinTec S3 will provide 400 litres of water between self cleans, (regeneration cycles).
  • So it therefore has to clean at least 511 times a year.
  • Each clean will require 17 litres of water per cleaning cycle, hence 8,687 litres of water each year will be sent down the drain.
  • Lets say that you are on a water meter, a typical cost per 1000 litres of water is £3. So you will spend over £26 a year on water, just for the water softener alone.

Now for the salt cost
  • For each clean cycle using between 0.25 kg and 0.35 kg per clean, the annual usage is 127.75 kg a year (set at 0.25 kg) or over 178 kg per year (set at 0.35 kg).
  • Salt blocks come in 8 kg packs, 2 x 4 kg per pack.
  • 127 kg divided by 8 kg is just close to 16 packs a year. That means that you will have to load 1 packet of block salt every 3 and bit weeks.
  • Harvey’s block salt vary in price, the official Harvey’s website currently sells 12 packets for £69.90. Close to 16 packs a year equates to £93.20 a year.

Some simple and quick calculations for the Kinetico 2020c HF:-
Water usage
  • Annual water usage for 4 people at 140 litres of water per per person per day = 204,400 litres per year.
  • For 300 mg/l water hardness the Kinetico 2020c HF will provide 370 litres of water between self cleans, (regeneration cycles). NB it is considered safer for this hardness to use a setting of 296 litres.
  • So it therefore has to clean at least 550 times a year, or with the conservative choice at 296 litres per cycle 690 times a year, (almost twice a day!)
  • Each clean will require 18.9 (claimed on literature, actual test results is 26 litres) litres of water per cleaning cycle, hence 10,395 litres (test show actual waste water is 17,940 litres of water each year will be sent down the drain).
  • Let’s say that you are on a water meter, a typical cost per 1000 litres of water is £3. So you will spend, in reality, over £53 a year on water, just for the water softener alone.
(This clean cycle water usage for the Kinetico 2020c HF water softener is over 8.7% of the actual annual water usage.)

Now for the salt cost
  • For each clean cycle using 0.3 kg per clean, the annual usage is 207 kg a year.
  • Salt blocks come in 8 kg packs, 2 x 4 kg per pack.
  • 207 kg divided by 8 kg is very close to 26 packs a year. That means that you will have to load 1 packet of block salt every 2 weeks.
  • Kinetico website salt prices are currently £106.08 for 20 packs.

(The Kinetico 2020c HF will cost the family of 4 in an average water hardness area of 300 mg/l a total just over £190 a year to run. Lets assume that you own water softener for 10 years. The total running cost will be £1900, without allowing for any inflation.)

Guide to buying a water softener

A frequent phone call that we will receive is “We are interested to know more about buying a water softener”.

The conversation then follows that another company has already given a water softener quote and that a comparison quote is required. Can we give the quote over the phone? This is not easy. Many factors must be explored unique to the property before buying a water softener decision can be reached.

There is occasionally resistance to have Pure Choice to visit because you might think that the first water softener supplier to quote has told you everything that there is to know about buying a water softener system.

This is frequently not the case. When we do visit we find out that the other supplier has been vague with the truth, and sometimes blatantly misled facts to confuse the choice of water softener selection. Many times we are commended for our approach to the topic of buying a water softener. Pure Choice is an independent supplier of many different makes of water softener. When you are buying a water softener from Pure Choice you can be confident that you have the most relevant information and best information on a wide range of choices.

Buying a water softener is normally a decision that needs careful consideration.

Your choices to buying a water softener vary from:

  • Online shops for DIY water softener installation
  • Local plumber (who seldom understands the finesse of different water softener systems)
  • The larger DIY stores, Wickes and B&Q are examples (who tend to sell a basic low cost water softener)
  • A water softener dealer (who only sells one brand)
  • An independent water softener supplier (who sells many different brands), Pure Choice being an example

An online shop for buying a water softener often is fraught with issues. How do you choose the correct specification of water softener from the limited information often available to you?

Local plumber, he may be a brilliant plumber, but quiz him or her on some basic understanding how the water softener works and the knowledge will be limited. Most do not even know that a code of practice exist specific to water softeners.

The larger DIY shops have a limited basic range of water softeners, which often give very poor performance and have very high on going cost.

The water softener dealer who is tied to one brand of water softener will always indicate that their water softener is the best water softener. It is common that they will compare their water softener to some pretty basic water softeners that make the one they are selling look good. Beware.

Like Pure Choice there are many independent water suppliers throughout the country who will provide a wide range of water softeners for you to consider buying. Pure Choice operates in the West of England, throughout Somerset, Devon, Dorset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire including Bristol and Bath.

Commercial water softener

Water softener for the commercial sectorCommercial water softener (s)

A commercial water softener does not necessarily imply that the water softener will be large.

The commercial water softener size ranges from small volume water softening to obviously some very demanding situations. It is important that the correct commercial water softener is specified for the requirement in hand. Problems will occur if the water softener is under sized, or even over sized.

So how do you ensure that the correct water softener is bought?

Several factors must be considered for a commercial water softener installation.

  • Volume of soft water required per day
  • Whether water is required 24/7
  • Is the demand for soft water constant or variable
  • What is the water supply pressure
  • What is the required application flow rates
  • How hard is the supply water and is totally soft water required
  • Plumbing pipe sizes (commercial water softeners have connections from 3/8 of an inch to over 4 inches)
  • Pressure loss across the commercial water softener when in service
  • Is water fed to a break tank or direct to the application
  • Space availability
  • Ongoing running and maintenance cost
  •  To name but a few

A visit to site is essential, no one should buy a commercial water softer “off the shelf” this is where future problems could occur.

Commercial water softener selection requires knowledge and expertise. We at Pure Choice have been requested to attend site where a commercial water softener has been installed only to find that the commercial water softener is inappropriate for the application which it is installed.

Commercial water softener applications vary from softening water to steam ovens, coffee machines, dishwashers to whole site water softening.

Pure Choice has a very strong customer base in the commercial water softener field. It is our long history of experience which enables us to ensure that you, or your client, receive the best water softener for the price that you, or they, have budgeted for. Pure Choice is happy to supply a commercial water softener for local plumber to install or we would normally organise the full installation or commissioning.
