Drinking water filter and filtration systems mainly use activated carbon filter these may be powdered carbon or moulded blocks. It is possible to have combination a drinking water filter that in part reduce other impurities. Moulded carbon block filters will also reduce particulate matter.
Activated carbon in the main cannot effectively eliminate water hardness (which contributes to film on tea and coffee). It also only offers a limited or no improvement in the reduction of inorganic compounds for example; Aluminium, fluoride, nitrates etc.

Water distillation is a copy of nature’s own mechanism for water purification. Water is gently heated so that the water vapour is released. The vapour is then condensed back into purified water at the point of collection. Although distillation offers a dramatic reduction in water contaminates the process is slow. The water distillation equipment, however, not being plumbed in has the ability to be easily transported from location to location.
Water purification utilises reverse osmosis technology. This will give the benefits of the activated carbon filtration systems and that of distillation. Most systems available employ two activated carbon filters together with a semi permeable membrane. The membrane will assist in the effective reduction of inorganic impurities, which the carbon filter will not. Unlike the distillation systems the reverse osmosis system will provide a convenient supply of treated water to a separate tap.
