If your clothes, sheets, and towels seem to have lost their luster, it could be the water you're using. Up to 60% of homes in the UK have hard or very hard water. Hard water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium. When it is left untreated, these minerals can attach to your fabrics, leaving them stiff and looking dull.
In addition to making your laundry look dingy, hard water allows soiling to build up on clothing. The minerals can also leave a powdery residue which weakens your fibers, resulting in holes and tears in your fabrics.
Will A Good Laundry Detergent Help?
While the ingredients in most laundry detergents are designed to penetrate and clean your clothing, most of your laundry soap actually binds to the magnesium and calcium which makes the detergent less effective at cleaning as well as removing odors.
Using a high-quality laundry detergent with a low-pH may help. Pre-treating fabrics that are stained or sweaty before washing is also a good idea. Using hotter water and adding more soap can improve cleaning as well. However, these solutions are limited in their ability to make your clothes look and smell cleaner. What's more, they increase your workload and laundry costs.
Will A Water Softening System Help?
Hard water is not just a laundry issue. A whole-home water softener system will remove minerals and scales from all the water in your house. So, not only will your laundry look brighter, your drinking water will be cleaner, and you may actually save your water pipes from unnecessary damage. Using a water softener is a great way to protect your home, household appliances, and improve the look of your laundry.
